Exporting a Route to GPS Device
The Garmin Edge 800/810/1000 will accept either TCX or GPX files.
GPX files are best if you have base maps installed because it will display both a styled map and text-based directions.
TCX files are best when you don't have base maps installed.
How to transfer the route to your device
- Save the GPX or TCX file to your computer.
- Plug the Edge 800/810/1000 in to your computer. Once connected, it is recognized as a USB drive.
- Open the "Garmin" folder in that drive.
- Find the folder labeled, "NewFiles". Move your downloaded TCX or GPX file there.
- Once the file has transferred, you can disconnect your Garmin.
- Now turn on your Garmin 800/810/1000. The route should be available in Courses on the device.
The Garmin Edge 605/705 will accept either TCX or GPX files.
GPX files will show your route on a map, and then use its built-in navigation to give you turn by turn directions.
TCX files will also show your route on a map, but will give you the turn-by-turn directions that were plotted on your Strava route.
How to transfer the route to your device
- Save the GPX or TCX file to your computer.
- Plug the Edge 605/705 in to your computer. Once connected, it is recognized as a USB drive.
- Open the "Garmin" folder in that drive.

If you are saving a GPX file find the folder labeled, "GPX". If it doesn't exist, you can create it. Then save the route to this folder.
If you are saving a TCX file find the folder labeled, "Courses". Save the route to this folder. - Once the file has transferred, you can disconnect your Garmin.
- Now turn on your Garmin 605/705. If you saved a GPX file, you'll find it in: Menu > Where To? > Saved Rides. If you saved a TCX file, you'll find it in: Menu > Training > Courses.
The Garmin Edge 500/510/520 supports TCX files.
How to transfer the route to your device
- Save the TCX file to your computer.
- Plug the Edge 500/510/520 in to your computer. Once connected, it is recognized as a USB drive.
- Open the "Garmin" folder in that drive.
- Find the folder labeled, "NewFiles" (If it doesn't exist, you can create it.). Save the route to this folder.
- Once the file has transferred, you can disconnect your Garmin.
- Now turn on your Garmin 500/510/520. The route should be available under Courses.
